DUESSELDORF: Two Germans and two Turkish men were convicted on Thursday over a foiled 2007 plot to attack US targets in Germany and given prison sentences ranging up to 12 years. Operating as a German cell of the radical Islamic Jihad Union,the four men had plotted bombing attacks against American citizens and facilities including the US Air Forces Ramstein base in Germany,the Duesseldorf state court found. Three defendants Fritz Gelowicz,Daniel Schneider and Adem Yilmaz were convicted of being members of a terrorist organisation,while Attila Selek was convicted of supporting a terrorist outfit.

Missing Indian toddler feared dead in Australia

Melbourne: A three-year old Indian toddler was feared dead after he went missing from his house here on Thursday. Victorian state police said a body of a toddler that has been found fits the description of Gurshan Singh Kaurchanna who went missing. Gurshan was in Australia on a holiday with his family and was due to return to India later this week. The body was found 30 kms away from his residence. According to AAP,Deputy Police Commissioner Ken Jones said: Clearly,the circumstances are suspicious so we are fearing the worst8230; We are treating it8230; as a homicide.

Baghdad blasts kill 17 as early voting begins

BAGHDAD: A string of blasts ripped through Baghdad targeting voters and killing 17 people on Thursday,authorities said,raising tensions in an already nervous city as early ballots are cast for Sundays general elections. Two of the blasts hit voters outside polling stations. Thursdays voting is for those who would not be able to vote on Sunday.

Tehran: Iranian authorities have freed 14 people arrested at award-winning filmmaker Jafar Panahis home. However,the pro-Opposition director remains detained,an Opposition website said on Thursday. Kaleme.com said Panahis wife and daughter were among the 14 released on Wednesday night,adding that Panahi and two others Mohammad Rassoulof and Mehdi Pourmoussa were still being held.

2 killed as freak waves hit cruise ship off Spain

Barcelona: Two people were killed and 14 injured when massive waves slammed into a cruise ship carrying some 2,000 people in the western Mediterranean. The freak waves smashed windows in the Louis Majesty. The captain rerouted the ship to the Spanish port of Barcelona.
