SYDNEY: An 11-year-old boy was recovering on Saturday after a sea lion mauled him at a Sydney zoo’s aquarium show. The boy,Jack Lister,had been invited by zookeepers to meet the 8-year-old female sea lion during the Taronga Zoo’s seal and sea lion show on Friday. After feeding the animal,Jack followed it off the stage,which spooked it. The sea lion bit the boy and left puncture wounds on his stomach.

Skydiving plane in NZ crashes,9 killed

WELLINGTON: Nine people were killed after a light aircraft belonging to a skydiving company burst into flames and crashed near a tourist spot in New Zealand’s Southern Alps in the afternoon,police said. The plane caught fire after takeoff from an airstrip at Fox Glacier on the country’s South Island. The pilot and eight passengers,including foreign tourists and New Zealanders were killed.

Mullen seeks Turkey support over Iran

ANKARA: Adm Michael Mullen,chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff stressed on Saturday the need for Turkey to help enforce UN sanctions against Iran aimed at deterring the Islamic Republic from obtaining a nuclear bomb. Mullen said that both countries agree that Iran should not achieve “a nuclear weapons capability”.

Indian convicts spared death

Singapore: Two Indian-origin Singaporeans,found guilty of killing a lorry driver in 2006,have been spared the death penalty and they now face a jail term of up to 20 years and at least 12 cane strokes. Daniel Vijay Katherasan and Christopher Sasmson Anpalagan,both 27,were convicted of robbery with hurt by the appeal court,which sent their case to High Court,The Straits Times reported.

Indian-American accused of playing race card

Washington: An Indian-American congressional candidate for the November elections to the US House of Representatives has been accused of playing the race card by raising money from the community. “The only one who has played the race card here is him,by going to Indian-American groups to raise money,” Mark Campbell,spokesman of sitting Republican Congressman Jim Gerlach,told Congressional newspaper The Hill. Gerlach is facing a tough challenge from Democrat Manan Trivedi in his Pennsylvania 6th District. “Dr Manan Trivedi is running a campaign focused on the Pennsylvania families and businesses struggling in this economy. Gerlach is making these charges to distract voters,” Kathy Kulkarni,president of the Indian American Leadership Initiative,said.

Pattinson narrowly escapes being crushed by elephant

London: Robert Pattinson has reportedly had a narrow escape from being crushed by an elephant on the set of his new movie Water for Elephants. The 24-year-old actor,who stars alongside Reese Witherspoon in the film was almost rolled on by an elephant Rosie,whilst trying to give her a bath,reported the National Enquirer. “The script called for the elephant to step forward while swinging her trunk from side to side,but Rosie got her signals mixed up. Instead,she sat down on her big butt,lifted her front legs — then rolled over. “Robert slid right down the elephant’s back. It could have been a disaster if she’d rolled over on him,but he got lucky,” said a source.

Naked owner scares away car thief in UK

London: A car thief who ventured out for game on the outskirts of London would not have bargained for a “large naked bloke” when he started off his stolen vehicle. The man fled after the vehicle’s owner ran to the spot naked,jumped into the passenger seat and said: “Where are we going then?” Russell Stuart,51,was asleep in his home in Kent,near London,when he heard his car start in the driveway. He ran outside without any clothes on,opened the passenger door and sat beside the thief. Stuart,a father of two,said the man flung the door open and ran off into the night as soon as he spotted “a big naked bloke” sitting next to him.
