Peshawar: Security forces gunned down at least six militants,including a commander,and apprehended 19 rebels during clearance and search operations in northwest Pakistan today,officials said. Militant commander Rahimuddin and five accomplices were killed in the restive Darra Adam Khel region during a gun battle with security forces,police said.

10 rockets strike US-Iraqi base,2 hurt

BAGHDAD: The US military said a barrage of rockets struck a joint American-Iraqi base south of Baghdad,injuring at least two and damaging equipment. The military says about 10 rockets struck Camp Sparrowhawk,near the town of Amarrah. It says the attack began on early Saturday morning. The rocket attack is the first major strike against a US base in months.

Myanmar frees dy leader of Opposition

Yangon: Myanmar’s military government on Saturday freed the 82-year-old deputy leader of the pro-democracy party headed by Aung San Suu Kyi after nearly seven years in detention. The release of Tin Oo,who helped found the National League for Democracy with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Suu Kyi,comes shortly before a UN envoy visits the country. Suu Kyi remains under house arrest. Tin Oo spent nearly seven years in prison and under house arrest. The junta had renewed his detention on an annual basis since his arrest in 2003,with his latest term expiring on Saturday.

BEIJING: Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao warned his people to keep a “sober mind” about the challenges ahead in the new year as the country welcomed the arrival of the Year of the Tiger with noisy celebrations on Saturday. “In 2010,China will face a more complicated situation,both at home and abroad,” Xinhua paraphrased Wen as saying. Priority should be given to “persistence in taking economic development as the central task”.

Somali minister dies of bombing wounds

MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Sports Minister has died in hospital in Saudi Arabia weeks after he was critically wounded in a suicide bombing at a medical graduation ceremony in Mogadishu,relatives and officials said on Saturday. Saleban Olad Roble passed away on Friday at a hospital in Riyadh,where he and other victims of the December 3 blast at the Shamo Hotel had been flown for treatment.

Woman savaged by shark in Australia

Sydney: An Australian woman suffered massive blood loss and was airlifted to hospital on Saturday after being savaged by a shark off an island on the Great Barrier Reef,officials said. The 60-year-old was dragged underwater by the shark near Dent Island,losing several litres of blood from deep leg wounds,the Queensland helicopter rescue service said.

‘Boycott lingerie shops with male staff’

Jeddah: Saudi women angry at being forced to buy intimate clothes from male sales clerks were urged on Saturday to begin a two-week boycott of lingerie shops. Reem Asaad,a Jeddah economics professor,announced the action as part of her campaign to press the government to reverse rules based on religion that prevent underwear stores from employing saleswomen. “I am calling for salesmen to be replaced with saleswomen,” said Asaad. “The only way to get things done is putting pressure on the industry,and (for) retailers to change,” she said.
