PORT-OF-SPAIN: Trinidad and Tobago has elected its first Indian-origin female Prime Minister. Kamla Persad-Bissessar,a grandmother of two,and her five-party Peoples Partnership coalition won 29 of 41 seats in the Caribbean nations Parliament,according to preliminary election results Tuesday. The 59-year-old attorney said,We will build on our collective strength and character.

BP starts new method to block oil spill

Louisiana: The US Coast Guard has given BP approval to try to stop the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico by pumping heavy mud into the well. BP began on Wednesday to apply the top kill manoeuver. Meanwhile,witness statements say managers complained oil giant BP was taking shortcuts by replacing heavy drilling fluid with saltwater in the well that blew out.

Mosque near Ground Zero approved

NEW YORK: A proposal to erect a mosque close to Ground Zero where the 9/11 attack took place got approval by a New York board despite opposition by a people who feel the plan hurts sentiments. The plan was pushed by a Kuwaiti-born Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and will cost 100 million.

Australia baby lives after being hit by train

MELBOURNE: A 15-month-old boy escaped with a few cuts on Wednesday after a train struck his stroller,which rolled onto the tracks when his grandmother looked away. Footage shows stroller being pushed a short distance down the tracks before the train comes to a halt.
