Irans n-facilities can be bombed,warns US general

WASHINGTON: Top US general David Petraeus on Sunday warned Iran that it has developed a variety of contingency plans apart from diplomacy and sanctions to deal with its nuclear facilities,emphasising that they can be bombed. Gen Petraeus,head of US Central Command,in-charge of the Gulf region,did not elaborate but said to CNN that the Pentagon has considered the impacts of any action taken.

Political clashes in Karachi,toll 39

KARACHI: Unidentified assailants shot dead 11 more people in Karachi,taking the death toll in clashes between workers of rival political groups to 39 over three days. The killings have increased tensions between the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement,which has threatened to quit the PPP-led coalitions at the centre.The violence is being seen as a turf war between the PPP and MQM for greater control over Karachi.

UAE Presidents brother acquitted

Dubai: Shaikh Eisa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan,brother of the UAE President,has been acquitted in connection with the videotaped beating of an Afghan,his lawyer said on Sunday. A court found him not responsible for the actions,including sexual abuse,last year. My clients acquittal shows that he was a victim of a conspiracy, the lawyer said.

Prachanda claims plot to kill him

KATHMANDU: Nepals opposition Maoists chief Prachanda has accused foreign powers of plotting to kill him and vowed to fight for national independence. Prachanda claimed that he has been receiving death threats.

S Korean dies in first legal euthanasia

SEOUL: A 77-year-old brain-dead South Korean woman died on Sunday more than 200 days after being taken off life support,in the countrys first case of legal euthanasia,officials said. Severance Hospital in Seoul said the woman,identified by her family name Kim,died in the afternoon 202 days after her life support was removed on a courts order.

Croatia votes for a new President

ZAGREB: Croats voted for a new President on Sunday. Social Democrat Ivo Josipovic,a 52-year-old law professor has held a lead in opinion polls over maverick Zagreb mayor Milan Bandic. Both men support Croatias aim to join the EU in 2011 or 2012.
