9 vessels with 95 Indians traced to Somalia
NEW DELHI: Nine hijacked vessels,carrying 95 Indians,have been traced to Somalian waters. The vessels have been located off Mogadishu and efforts are being made to secure their release,official sources said on Monday. Somali pirates,who seized 11 dhows over the past 10 days have released two vessels with 26 Indians on board and the government believes the remaining hostages are safe. India has approached the Somalian government for help to ensure the release of the captured dhows.
Man appeals to HC for blast accused son
MUMBAI: Frustrated over a seven- year delay in the 2003 Mumbai serial blasts trial,father of accused Saquib Nacahan on Monday urged the Bombay High Court to declare that his son was not involved in the crime and thereby remove the stigma of being labelled a terrorists father. Justice Dilip Bhosale and Justice A R Joshi asked the government and the then Joint Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria to file replies by April 12.
HC dismisses plea against Chatwal
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed a petition challenging the Centres decision to confer Padma Bhushan on NRI hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal. A Bench headed by acting Chief Justice Madan B Lokur,after going through the original documents placed before it by the Additional Solicitor General P P Malhotra,found no substance in the allegation of petitioner,S K Shah,that proper procedure was not followed while giving the award.
Indian gets highest French civilian award
NEW DELHI: The French government on Monday conferred its highest civilian award on Muthusamy Varadarajan,former Union Secretary Culture and president of Alliance Francaise de Delhi,for his contribution to Indo-French cooperation in the academic and cultural fields. French Ambassador to India Jerome Bonnafont presented the medal of Chevalier de la Legion dHonneur to Varadarajan at a function here.
Netaji birthday not Day of Patriotism
NEW DELHI: The government has rejected a request made by an MP Barun Mukherjee to declare the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose as the Day of Patriotism,saying that the idea did not appear appropriate. V Narayanasamy,Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs said that even Mahatma Gandhis birth anniversary had not been declared a special day for freedom.
80-yr-old dies after being hit by clerk
MAINPURI UP: An 80-year-old man on Monday died after allegedly being hit by a government employee over issuance of a cheque,the police said. Benchey Lal died after being hit by Ram Chandra,a clerk in social welfare department, the police said. Lals son-in-law stated that Lal had sought financial aid for his daughters marriage under a state scheme. But Chandra was demanding Rs 3,000 from Lal for issuing the cheque. When Lal expressed his inability to pay,Chandra allegedly hit him.
Court rejects plea to shift Sadhvi
NASHIK: Additional District and Sessions Court judge S T Naik on Monday rejected an application of the government urging the court to shift prime accused in the Malegaon blast case Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur from Nashik road Central Jail to another jail,counsel of Sadhvi Umesh Walzade said. According to Public Prosecutor Ajay Misar,Sadhavi had said that she was being harassed by jail authorities and wished to be shifted. ENS amp; PTI
