The West Bengal government is opposed to the Medical Council of Indias decision to conduct the common entrance test (CET) in a single language for admission to MBBS courses from 2013.
Director of Medical Education Dr Susanta Banerjee said they had always been against the move and would meet the representatives of MCI again to discuss the matter.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) for admission to undergraduate courses in the countrys 335 medical colleges would be held on May 13,2013,MCI officials said, even as the Ministry of Healths nod in this connection is awaited. The core syllabus on which NEET-UG will be based can be downloaded from the MCI website.
The CPM-backed doctors organisation claimed that West Bengal education board students would face difficulty if the single entrance test was introduced because their syllabus was different from that of CBSE. A member of the organisation said students of Bengal would suffer if CET was introduced before the science syllabi of Higher Secondary Education Council were tuned to the all-India standard.
The doctors have also demanded that more seats be reserved for those clearing the test from the state.
The Trinamool Congress-backed Progressive Service Doctors Association that had earlier opposed CET is now in favour of it,provided the state government is allowed to conduct counselling.
