Assam govt bans bandhs for a month

The government also registered a case against the sponsors of Tuesday’s bandh.

As a 12-hour-long bandh called by a minority organisation protesting the Kokrajhar clashes led to the spread of violence on Tuesday, the Assam government on Wednesday banned bandhs for a month. The government also registered a case against the sponsors of Tuesday’s bandh. “While the Supreme Court declared bandhs as illegal in 1997 and the Gauhati High Court also passed a similar order in 2010,the Assam government on Wednesday issued an order banning bandhs initially for a 30-day period…” said Home Secretary G D Tripathi. The ban follows the bandh called by the All Assam Minority Students’ Union and 30 other groups that led to a series of violent incidents in which one person was killed and scores of people, including policemen, injured.
