Art in 2010: Year of records

The January retrospective of Krishen Khanna featuring over 120 works done over a span of over 50 yrs.

The year 2010 could be called a year of retrospectives in the field of Indian art which heralded the year with leading modernist painter Krishen Khanna inaugurating his retrospective while December saw another reigning stalwart Ramkumar putting up works he had done over his lifetime.

The January retrospective of Krishen Khanna featuring over 120 works done over a span of over 50 years by online auctioneers Saffronart was hosted at the Lalit Kala here. It showcased works by the 84-year-old artist charting the evolution of India and its people sourced from private and public collections from across the country.

In December,the Vadhera Art Gallery put up at the Lalit Kala a retrospective exhibition of art by Ramkumar spanning 60 years of his career from 1950 to 2010. A similar retrospective of the artist was also panned by the Aicon Gallery in New York in the month of November.

In April this year ,Dhoomimal Gallery,one of the oldest galleries in the country put up on display more than 200 works of Francis Newton Souza that it sourced from its private collections.

The 10-day show “Volte Face: Souza\’s Iconoclastic Vision” curated by art historian Yashodhara Dalmia,also hosted film screenings,poetry sessions,talks with friends and collectors.

In November,Anish Kapoor\’s retrospective was inaugurated at the National Gallery of Modern Art and Mumbai\’s Mehboob Studio. Featuring 25 art installations,the three-month exhibition held between Mumbai\’s Mehboob Studio and the NGMA here chronicles Kapoor\’s over three decade career.

In August the NGMA displayed photographs from the personal collection of photographs and negatives of India\’s first woman photographer Homya Vyarawalla. It ran the course of the Commonwealth Games in October this year.

Aicon Gallery put up a retrospective “Raghu Rai: A Retrospective” in February.

In May a specially curated exhibition,”The Masterstroke: Art of Rabindranath Tagore” was inaugurated at the National Gallery of Modern Art in the capital.

“Treasury of the World: Jewelled Arts of India in the Age of the Mughals,” in March opened at the AsianCivilisations Museum (ACM) in Singapore and exhibited till June objects used by the Mughal emperors and his court including household items,jewellery and weapons.

To mark her 70 th birthday,Anjolie Ela Menon launched an exhibition featuring works highlighting significant phases of the artist\’s life along with a biography spanning over half a decade of her career.
