Accused activated bombs at Delhi station dorm: NIA

Supplementary chargesheet filed by the NIA on Wednesday before a local court against Rajender Chaudhary,prime accused in the Samjhauta blast case,reveals that he along with three other accused had activated the four suitcase bombs in the dormitory of Old Delhi Railway Station before placing it in the train on February 18,2007. In the blast,68 people were killed.

At the station,the four had broken into two groups to place the bombs,of which two exploded. After that,they moved to Indore to discuss the fallout.

The NIA revealed before duty magistrate Anudeep Kaur Bhatti that on the day of the blast,two accused,Lokesh Sharma and Kamal Chauhan,had booked two beds at the dormitory. After some time,Chaudhary and another accused,Venkat Mahalkar,also arrived and booked two beds. While Sharma,Chauhan and Chaudhary are currently in Central Jail,Ambala,Mahalkar is absconding.

All the accused left the station after leaving the bombs inside the wooden almirahs in the dormitory. When they returned in the evening,Mahalkar set the timers of two bombs while Chaudhary kept a watch. However,Sharma could not do the same as more people were present in the dormitory. He informed Mahalkar about the problem after which they exchanged the suitcase bombs on the staircase connecting the dormitory and the ground floor.

Mahalkar set the timers of other two bombs and along with Chaudhary reached the platform from where the train was supposed to start. They planted the bombs in the unreserved compartments. The bombs placed in the 12th and 13 compartments exploded.

One unexploded bomb was found in the 15th bogie and was defused. Another bomb was recovered from the “spot down the railway lines”.

All four accused reached Jaipur by train after placing the bombs and moved to Indore by bus.

The chargesheet says the day before the blast,Chaudhary,on Sharma’s instructions,visited Mahalkar in Indore. Another accused who is now on the run,Ramchandar Kalsangra,delivered the bombs to the four-member team. They boarded the Indore Inter-City Express and reached Nizamuddin Station. From there they took a local train to Old Delhi Station.
