68 appointed to MCI,office bearers’ elections soon

No call has yet been taken on nomination of Ketan Desai.

Still awaiting legal advice on the validity of former Medical Council of India (MCI) president Ketan Desai’s nomination to the council by its Gujarat chapter, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Wednesday reconstituted the MCI appointing 68 members.

With this, the Board of Governors constituted after the MCI was dissolved in June, which was to oversee MCI elections, stands dissolved. The MCI secretary will have to start preparations for elections to the office bearers’.

“No call has yet been taken on nomination of Ketan Desai. These 68 names were received before the Gujarat nomination came in and the names have been announced after usual approvals. The other names will be notified as and when the names come in,” said a senior official.

Desai, the head of urology at B J Medical College and president of the Gujarat Medical Council, was arrested by the CBI in April 2010 for his alleged role in granting approvals to a medical college to take in additional students without adequate infrastructure.
