4,600 complaints of unauthorised construction in Delhi

MCD received 4,686 complaints of unauthorised constructions but only 79 were taken up for probe.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has received over 4,600 complaints regarding unauthorised constructions in the capital in the past 18 months following which 188 engineers were punished for allowing the coming up of illegal structures.

This was disclosed by Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullapally Ramachandran in Lok Sabha on Tuesday in a written reply.

During 2010 and upto June 30 this year,he said,the MCD received 4,686 complaints regarding unauthorised constructions and out of these,79 were taken up for probe by the Vigilance Department on the basis of the gravity of the allegations.

“The remaining complaints were forwarded to the concerned Deputy Commissioner or Head of Department for taking appropriate action. During this period,188 engineers of MCD were proceeded against departmentally for allowing unauthorised constructions,” Ramachandran said.

He said during the last one year,in Trans-Yamuna area,1,062 properties were booked for demolition,200 properties were sealed and 1,294 properties were demolished,which included demolition of ongoing unauthorised constructions without booking.

This action came following the collapse of a multi-storeyed building in east Delhi’s Lalita Park which claimed over 70 lives.

Ramachandran said the National Institute for Disaster Management is yet to submit its report on the vulnerability survey it conducted in Trans-Yamuna area.
