Militants on Wednesday gunned down four CRPF men in north Kashmirs Baramulla district. They also fled with service rifles of two of the CRPF men.
Inspector General of Police,Kashmir,Farooq Ahmed said the attack took place on the Sopore-Bandipore highway around 2 pm when a CRPF mobile patrol of 177 battalion was ambushed by militants at Janwara,Warpora. While five personnel of the patrol walked into an orchard for lunch,three of them went to the other side of the road. The militants attacked the five men with rifles,killing two on the spot and injuring the other three, Ahmed said. The two injured jawans succumbed in the hospital.
CRPF spokesman in Srinaga Prabhakar Tripathi said two to four militants carried out the attack on the CRPF jawans from the Road Opening Party (ROP). The other group of CRPF men could not retaliate properly as there was a group of young children playing in the nearby ground. The militants took advantage of this and fled from the spot, the spokesman said. Our two assault rifles are also missing.
The deceased CRPF men have been identified as head constable Prabhakar Singh from Balasore (Orissa),head constable A K Upadhyay from Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh),constable Kuleep Singh from Bagpat (UP) and Shib Shankar Das from Purulia (West Bengal).
Soon after the incident,the Army was requisitioned by the police to carry out a search operation in the area to trace the militants. The search is on to trace the militants, said a police officer in Sopore.
No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack comes a day after Director General of Police Khuldeep Khoda said militancy-related incidents in Kashmir have declined by around 25 per cent.
