Two policemen were arrested Saturday for their alleged involvement in the custodial killing of Nazim Rashid,25,in Sopore last week.
Constables Nissar Ahmad and Mohammad Abbas were taken into custody by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to probe the killing in the evening. The SIT is headed by DSP Mir Rasiq.
Nazims death had sparked a series of protests across Kashmir, particularly in north Kashmir. His father,Abdul Majid Shallah,a retired police officer, has accused the policemen at Sopore police station of torturing his son to death. He told the investigators that the body of his son bore visible torture marks.
The SIT said it would soon question all the other policemen involved in the detention of Nazim.
Itll take some time to reach a conclusion in this case, said Rasiq, when asked what the SIT had found so far. He parried further questions about the details of the probe as well as the arrests.
Earlier, the J&K government had constituted a three-member team of doctors to conduct autopsy on Nazims body. The team has collected samples and sent them to a forensic science lab. A report from the lab is awaited.
Meanwhile, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate,Sopore, who is heading a magisterial inquiry into the killing has recorded statements of the doctors and sought information about the torture marks on Nazims body. With PTI
