NAGPUR, June 10: The weavers of Bhandara and Nagpur districts have decided to launch an indefinite strike from Thursday (June 12), to press for their demand of implementing the 1981 Supreme Court judgement or provide facilities for voluntary retirement.

In a press statement here, Mannu Dutta of Bunkar Mazdoor Sangharsha Samiti claimed that Akhil Bharatiya Vinkar Sanghatana, Momin Julaha Bunkar Action Committee, Kamptee and Haatmag Mahamanmdal Vinkar Sanghatana , have extended their support to the proposed agitation.

He pointed out that the Supreme Court had directed the Maharashtra Government in 1981 to treat weavers as industrial workers and provide them regular employment. If the State Government fails to provide employment regularly, it has to pay the necessary compensation to them. Besides, they are entitled for gratuity, house rent allowance and other facilities, the judgement said.

Dutta said that the State Government had miserably failed to provide regular jobs to poor weavers. The weavers’ leader alleged that the government was not implementing the Supreme Court judgement so far and thus it was liable for a contempt of court. Nagpur Guardian Minister Nitin Gadkari and Lok Sabha member from Nagpur, Banwarilal Purohit had assured the weavers to implement the court judgement one year back.
