NEW DELHI, July 3: The Congress today said a ``weak, unstable UF Government is plunging the nation into a crisis'' the first formal attack on the United Front (UF) since the crisis in the Janata Dal (JD) erupted a few weeks ago.Party spokesman V N Gadgil voiced the party's disgust at the intra-party bickerings in the JD today, a feeling which he said was shared by the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) presidents, who met today under party president Sitaram Kesri's chairmanship. But, significantly, Kesri reiterated that the Congress will continue to support the Gujral Government. The meeting of the PCC chiefs was the first-ever after Kesri was elected to the party top post last month. Though the meeting largely dwelt with Congress affairs, the present political situation was also reviewed. The line which seems to have emerged is that the UF could well precipitate a mid-term election and the Congress would have to be ``prepared to come back to power''.Gadgil added that the ``nation is looking to the Congress to provide leadership in this hour of crisis'', a broad pointer towards the Congress thinking. In his address Kesri indicated as much, saying a special responsibility rested on the party as it stayed united while other parties were disintegrating. He said with the holding of the organisational elections, the party had been revitalised.``The Congress alone can face the challenges from communalism, casteism and separatism. Secularism is in the blood of Congressmen and the party is free from casteism,'' Kesri said.
