SYDNEY, JANUARY 4: There was minor consolation for the Indians from the 0-3 whitewash against the Australians. Sachin Tendulkar was chosen the Man of the Series.

It would be impossible to find a parallel in the history of the game where a team has been given a thorough drubbing yet a player from their team is given this honour.

Both Tendulkar and Kapil Dev are pragmatic enough to realise that for Indian cricket, if it has to overcome the serious crisis facing it, the adminstration has to take some radical steps to improve the standard of the game in the country. It is a crisis which should not get bogged down in ego clashes and be personality-driven.

Let us give individuals all the status they deserve and be very critical if that right is denied, but let that not be made the only issue because of which the sport, despite all the money and popularity, is suffering. The Indian captain and the coach, in their post-match press conference, spoke about the cricket adminstration in Australia — how it improveswith each passing year — and a few lessons the Indians have to learn from the Austrailan team.

“Australia is a champion team and there is no harm in learning from them,” said Tendulkar. Kapil spoke glowingly about the facilites for the players in Australia, the conditions of the ground and the way players are taken care of.

Both were pointedly asked about the relationship between the two teams and the umpiring controversies, especially in reference to Darrell Hair. Both avoided giving any direct reply. Tendulkar, to a question that does he think the umpires were unfair to his team and is there a need for neutral umpires standing from both the ends, replied: “My job is to play the game. Let those who have to deal with this issue — the ICC — deal with it.”
