MARCH 28: Pakistan cricket coach Javed Miandad said on Tuesday that his team held a superior record against India because they played better under pressure and were “better fighters”.

Miandad, who has returned to the key job to reverse Pakistan’s sliding fortunes, dismmised the view that Australia and South Africa were at the top while sub-continent cricket was on the downswing as a “myth”.

He said Pakistan could dominate India because of the team’s core strength. “I think it is the mental make-up and skill which decide the winner. Further, we always tend to play well under pressure,” Miandad said, referring to the win in the ongoing triseries here and in Australia recently.

On whether he felt India had a mental block playing against Pakistan, especially in Sharjah, he said “The record does suggest it. I think where we have an edge over India is that we are better fighters”.

Asked whether things have changed since he quit as coach before World Cup last year due to differences with seniors, including then skipper Wasim Akram, he said “it is all past”.

It was Akram who recommended his name to PCB.“You must realise we all want team’s welfare,” he said.

Miandad admitted he was a dominating character. “What is wrong with that? I try to control the team, bring the best out of them. But don’t get the impression I work alone and all the time am trying to stamp my authority. I prefer working with seniors, putting my points across and convincing them of my line of action”.
