West Bengal Police has decided to proceed against CRPF DIG Aloke Raj in a case of molestation at Nandigram, a hot bed of violence between supporters of CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress.

The Superintendent of Police of Midnapore East district, S S Panda, said that the police investigation was on into the allegations of molestation and physical assault made by two women.

“On the basis of an FIR lodged by the women, our investigation is on. We have taken the statements from the victims. The matter will go to the court and a trial will take place,” he said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Raj told from Ranchi on Wednesday that he was weighing his legal options.

“Though the FIRs are still there in the police station, I have heard that the inquiry report gave me a clean chit….

I will soon ask the Bengal government to give me a copy of the complaints and the inquiry report. My force is supposed to be on duty at Nandigram, but I am kept out. I have received no orders to go there on May 21,” Raj said.

On May 18, state Home Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti had said in the state secretariat that the charge of molestation against Alok Raj had been found to be baseless.

But when contacted, Chakraborty later said the media had misinterpreted his version.

“The inquiry report by IG, Western Range, Rakesh Gupta, said that the allegation of molestation against the DIG, CRPF was found wrong, but this is a democratic country and if someone lodges a complaint at a police station, the police will do its duty,” Chakraborty said.

Moreover, he said, there was a case of physical assualt against the DIG too. “I never said that he got a clean chit in that case. How can the state government retract the complaints? The law will take its own course.” It was in the wee hours of May 11 on poll day at Nandigram that two women from Sonachura, CPI-M supporters, filed an FIR against CRPF DIG Alok Raj, alleging that they had been molested and beaten by him on the night of May 10 during a raid.

The DIG denied the charges and claimed they were meant to bring pressure on him. Later, he was involved in a telephonic spat with CPI-M MP Laxman Seth.West Bengal Police has decided to proceed against CRPF DIG Aloke Raj in a case of molestation at Nandigram, a hot bed of violence between supporters of CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress.
