CHANDIGARH, April 19: A Labourer was injured when the boundary wall of four Sector 23 government houses collapsed today as it could not withstand the gushing water after the labourers erroneously damaged a water pipe while digging a trench.
The injured, Anup Kumar of Purnia district in Bihar, was rushed to the Sector 32 Government Medical Hospital, where he was discharged after first aid.
The incident took place at 4.30 p.m. when the labourers accidently hit the main water supply pipe while digging a trench for laying a telephone cable near the boundary wall of the houses, located on the Sector 22-23 dividing road.
As the pipe burst, water came gushing towards the boundary wall, which could not withstand the pressure and collpased, injuring a labourer.
Water supply in the nearby areas was adversely affected as a result and the main dividing road between Sectors 22 and 23 was inundated with water.
Residents alleged that despite informing the Public Health authorities, no official or employee reached the site to repair the damaged water pipe.The Executive Engineer, Public Health, of the Municipal Corporation told Newsline that the leakage had been plugged and the supply was resumed at 9 p.m. He said the service connection to houses was cut due to the collapse of the wall.
