MUMBAI, April 21: For nearly one lakh Virar residents, water will be scarce to come by “until further notice.” The Virar Municipal Council (VMC) has announced a water cut for four days in the week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Said VMC officer Ashok Rankhamb, the water cut has been necessitated by shrinking water levels in the Usgaon river, the main source of water supply to Virar residences since the last two years.

Although the river and its surrounding areas were declared an irrigation zone by the state government some decades ago, the VMC was permitted to construct a new pipeline to supply water to Virar residents only three years back. Work on the Rs 500 crore water supply scheme for Virar has also been left incomplete due to a `technical problem’ between CIDCO and the MMRDA, said sources.

The water cut, though, will be a boon for water tanker owners, who operate 300-odd tankers supplying well water to housing complexes in the area. Depending on its capacity, each tanker is sold between Rs 325and 500.
