With another Cabinet reshuffle come and gone, and Mamata Banerjee still outside and looking in, Trinamool Congress leaders are admitting in private that it’s time their chief realised where power equations lie in the BJP. Citing the example of Pramod Mahajan, they want Mamata to quit banking on PM A.B. Vajpayee and warm up to L.K. Advani instead.

The Trinamool leader was herself curt in her reaction to the reshuffle. ‘‘It’s the BJP’s internal matter and we have nothing to do with it,’’ she said at her house-cum-office in south Kolkata. ‘‘We were never too keen on joining the ministry,’’ she added.

However, according to sources, Mamata was hoping for a berth in the Cabinet this time and had engaged Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Trivedi to do the groundwork. Trinamool insiders confide she was driving a hard bargain, seeking telecommunications as well as independent charge of Metro Railways.
