JAIPUR, OCT 12: Police arrested a 40-year-old man who threatened to beat up Rajasthan Congress general secretary Raghu Sharma if he continued to criticise state president Girija Vyas. Vidyadhar Sharma claimed to be a former Congress worker and an admirer of Vyas.

Raghu Sharma, who is considered to be loyal to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, had a tiff with Vyas last week at a party meeting in the presence of election authority chairperson Urmila Ben Patel. Vyas left the meeting in a huff after Sharma allegedly used expletives.

Police said Vidyadhar went to Raghu’s house yesterday morning and issued the threat to his wife. A police team was deployed in the area. Vidhyadhar was arrested when he came to Raghu’s house today afternoon. Police said Vidhyadhar told them that he was agitated over Raghu Sharma’s behaviour at the paty meeting.

Vyas condemned the threat on the general secretary and described it as a “handiwork” of those trying to undermine the Congress. She urged party members to maintain discipline.

Her two confidantes, general secretary Pankaj Pancholi and secretary Riyazuddin Sheikh, condemned the incident, calling it a “conspiracy to defame Vyas and the party”.
