In a letter to UN secretary general Kofi Annan, NDA leaders A.B. Vajpayee, L.K.Advani and George Fernandes today requested him to ‘‘assist us in our democratic duty’’ by urging the Volcker Committee to provide them with a host of documents pertaining to the Indian connection. These include:

Documents which assisted it in arriving at the names of Natwar Singh and Congress party as having been part of the oil for food programme (OFFP)

Whether any prior intimation and opportunities were given to concerned person and entity in India, including evidence of the same, so that they could explain themselves

Explain the modalities following in the investigation

Confirm with documentary evidence as to When (Date), Who (Name) made the authorisation, How (in writing or oral) and To Whom (name and particulars) to lift the allotment of oil made to the Congress party.

While stating that they want the information because the issue ‘‘is bound to feature as soon as Parliament reopens’’, the Opposition leaders maintained that they were not motivated by partisan politics. ‘‘We wish to make it quite clear that we have no intention of playing domestic politics in the international arena.’’
