After a brief lull, Naxal violence broke out in Malkangiri on Sunday afternoon that killed two extremists, including one woman. Two security personnel escaped with minor injuries when the CPI (Maoist) triggered a series of landmine explosions in a remote forest area under Kalimela police limits on the Orissa-Andhra Pradesh border.
Around noon on Sunday, two motor-cycle-borne ‘‘combing operation’’ parties were crossing a culvert when the Naxalites triggered six landmines blasts. By the time the first explosion took place, the first patrolling party had crossed the area. Alerted, the second party stayed off the track, but the militants went on with five more blasts.
This was followed by a heavy exchange of fire between the security personnel and the extremists. Six more landmines and three un-assembled ones were recovered from the spot and neutralised by security forces.
Director-General of Police B.B. Mishra said the joint team of Grey Hound personnel and CRPF men apprehended two suspected Naxalites. But the extremists resorted to retaliatory fire in which two of their members were gunned down by police. Subsequently, two more suspected Naxals were nabbed.
The joint team also overran a Naxalite camp in the area and recovered arms and ammunitions. The DGP said the security personnel recovered one SLR, two 303 rifles, one double barrel gun, a pistol, a type writer, printer, generator and other furniture.
Communication to Malkangiri district has been virtually cut off as telephone lines are down. Moreover, radio communication has been affected too.
In another incident in Andhra Pradesh, four policemen sustained minor injuries when
Naxalites blew up landmines in North Sileru area in Visakhapatnam district.
