July 16: A 40-year-old villager from Shiravane in Thane has been found guilty on charges of culpable homicide not to amounting to murder. He has been sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine a sum of Rs 1000 and in default another six months rigorous imprisonment.

The deceased, Ramchandra Pandurang Mhatre, was the uncle of the accused. The two had fought over some construction work that was on in Ramachandra’s house, where the accused was also residing. The complaint by Vidya Ramchandra Mhatre stated that while she and her father were in the house, the accused along with three persons attacked him brutally with a bamboo stick. He sustained injuries on his head and fell unconscious. He succumbed his injuries the next day.
