LUCKNOW, AUGUST 2: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee held a 50-minute talk with 25 newly-elected village pradhans of his constituency yesterday through video-conferencing as part of a nationwide programme in which five states, including Gujarat and Orissa, took part.

Three days back, the pradhans knew little about video-conferencing but after hectic rehearsals, they seemed to be almost at ease with the new technology. They listened to the Prime Minister and apprised him about the local problems of their respective areas. Vajpayee, in turn, assured them that the problems will be looked into.

The key organiser of the event was the Indian Space Research Organisation whose Director was camping here to make the show a success. Other agencies involved in the programme included Deen Dayal Training and Research Institute, Educational TV, Doordarshan and the Prime Minister and Chief Minister’s offices.

The selection of pradhans had been made with extra care as the organisers did not want any pradhan to embarrass the Prime Minister. The job to choose the pradhans and brief them about the words to be used during the discussion was assigned to the Block Development Officers. The video-conferencing was held at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Institute at Bakshi Ka Talab and audio-conferencing at three different places in the state capital.
