The Congress is considering various solutions to address the demand for statehood to Vidarbha region in Maharashtra, including bringing a resolution in the Assembly on the issue.

The party high command has been stressing the Vidarbha demand would be considered only with similar demands in other states.

In Maharashtra, Assembly elections might be held with Lok Sabha polls next year, and a resolution could buy the party some reprieve. Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said there is no demand yet for such a resolution of this nature. Maharashtra PCC has earlier brought two resolutions, one seeking a separate Vidarbha unit and another for statehood. Senior leaders are talking to Sathe to thrash out an understanding on the issue. Towards this end, MPCC president Ranjit Deshmukh today met party chief Sonia Gandhi and senior party leader Pranab Mukherjee.

Not keen on fully supporting the demand immediately, the party seems to be left with three options. One, the MPCC brings another resolution supporting statehood, reiterating its earlier stand. Two, the government could constitute a regional party unit for Vidarbha. As the last option, the government could bring a resolution in the Assembly.
