In a fresh bid to keep its temple movement alive, the VHP today gave away Ram Raksha Sankalp Sutra to its nearly 200 organising secretaries at Karsewakpuram in Ayodhya.
From the function that was attended by 16 BJP and two Sena MPs as well, these secretaries will return to their respective regions and distribute the sankalp sutra( holy thread) to two crore Hindus who will take a pledge to keep it tied to their wrists till the Ram temple is constructed.
‘‘The thread on their wrist will be a reminder that they have an unfinished task before them; the task being that of temple construction at the disputed site,’’ said VHP media incharge at Karsewakpuram Sharad Sharma. The sankalp sutra is being given in a bag that contains a photo of the model of the proposed temple, a pouch with Ram Raj — mud from the sanctum sanctorum of the makeshift temple — and Tulsi beads.
Today’s programme started with a yagna in which senior VHP leaders Ashok Singhal and Acharya Giriraj Kishore participated along with state BJP chief Vinay Katiyar. Katiyar, who is on a state-wide Jan Jagran Yatra, had specially come for the Sankalp Sutra programme.‘‘The Ram wave in Uttar Pradesh can easily be felt and it’s very similar to that in 1991 (The period when the temple movement was at its peak),’’ said Katiyar.
‘‘There is no question of any compromise on the issue. The Ram temple will be built at the disputed site soon and this is simply the lull before the storm,’’ he claimed.
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Nirupam, who was also present on the occasion, told mediapersons that the issue is linked to the sentiments of crores of Hindus around the world and no court in the country has the power to give its verdict on the issue. ‘‘The temple will be built on the disputed site and there should be no confusion about this,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, the VHP spokesman in Ayodhya said that the Sankalp Sutra programme will continue till mid-July after which the sadhus and saints would disclose their future plans regarding temple construction.
