Clearly putting pressure on the BJP to get L K Advani to either retract or qualify his remarks in Pakistan, the VHP which was the first to attack him, today indicated that it would soon float a party to ‘‘fight for Hindutva.’’
Senior VHP leaders here even claimed they had started looking for a name for the new party. When asked about this, VHP international general-secretary Praveen Togadia said: ‘‘Just wait and see for 48 hours.’’
‘‘Advani has not just betrayed Hindus of this country, but also the BJP. The BJP may do whatever it wants to but we will not sacrifice our ideology for the sake of power,’’ said Togadia. ‘‘His one statement has shattered all those who have made sacrifices for the cause of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.’’
Togadia claimed there is a section within the BJP, which is unhappy with Advani’s remarks and is in touch with the VHP.
Asked if the discontent was limited to the Gujarat unit, Togadia said, ‘‘Not just VHP, people across the country are feeling cheated by these statements (of Advani).’’
‘‘When VHP was putting up anti-Advani posters in the former deputy prime minister’s constituency, several BJP leaders put pressure not to do such a thing as it will cause immense damage to the party. But we very categorically told them that party and VHP are two separate entities and that we would continue to protest what we think is not in-keeping with our ideology,’’ said a senior state VHP leader.
What has irked the VHP in Gujarat even further is the fact that Advani has stuck to his statements on his return. The VHP came out very strongly against Advani when he stated that December 6, 1992, was the saddest day of his life. Togadia, while addressing a meeting in Vadodara on Sunday, went to the extent of calling Advani a traitor.
