AMRITSAR, Aug 18: Various human rights organisations and Dal Khalsa International today condemned criticism of People’s Commission set up by Justice (retired) Kuldip Singh to probe cases of violation of human rights by police during militancy.
Kirpal Singh Randhawa, deputy chairman of Punjab Human Rights Organisation in a press release said that certain vested interests were making misleading propaganda against the commission. He joined issue with Punjab BJP Chief Daya Singh Sodhi and told him to refrain from interfering in the Sikh affairs. He said BJP had shamefully demolished Babri Masjid and misled the nation.
Kirpal Singh said Sodhi had won elections to Parliament with the help of the Akalis and people victimised by police had voted for the SAD-BJP alliance with the hope that justice will be done to them. He said two out of three judges of the People’s Commission were non-Sikhs and their credibility in the judicial world could not be challenged.
He also appealed to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to see the ground realities and patronise the People’s Commission. He said the kin of victims of police atrocities should be given jobs on priority and demanded action against police personnel who were still violating human rights.
Sandip Singh and Paramjit Singh Dhaliwal, senior leaders of the SAD human rights wing condemned the BJP and Congress for speaking against the commission and alleged that both these parties were enemies of Punjab. He said the BJP had been blamed for anti-Muslim riots in Bombay and the Shri Krishna Commission described the party as anti minority.
Kanwarpal Singh, spokesman of Dal Khalsa said the People’s Commission was well within the parameters of law and the democratic norms. He flayed BJP MLA Laxmi Kanta Chawla for spreading communal hatred and criticising the commission. He said the last assembly election was a mandate against anti-Sikh stance of the Congress party and the statement of Amrinder Singh against Justice Kuldip Singh and the Commission was not different from his predecessors in the PPCC.
