Pune, Sept 29: Indian languages have been facing the threat of being relegated to the background ever since the introduction of windows and the advancement of information technology. English had been ruling the roost. But no more.

Come Vijayadashami and it will turn auspicious for Indian languages too. With the launching of `iLEAP’, the Indian languages word processing software by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), along with its on screen keyboard and typing assistance for all languages, now creation of vernacular web pages will become a reality. It will certainly usher in a new era for better use of the Indian languages by the SOHO users.

Ignorance of English will no more be a handicap. If you are conversant with any one Indian language that is all you need as basics. No previous experience is needed to get started with Indian languages. There are quite a few choices. To type in Indian languages you may choose from Indian language typewriter keyboard, Indian languages phonetic keyboard or phonetic English keyboard. In fact the phonetic keyboard, with aesthetic fonts, enables the newcomer to write the way a language is spoken.

The languages supported in the software package are Marathi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Assamese, Bengali, English, Hindi, Kannada, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil and Telugu with 10 fonts of each language.

E-mail users have been haunted by the question: How to attach Indian language documents to E-mail messages? The latest software has answer to all these questions and more. `iLEAP’ (ver 2.0) gets invoked automatically at the receiver’s end to view the messages. Apart from the provision for sending multilingual E-mail messages, the multilingual spell-checker puts the user at ease. The software also enables easy to insert, delete and select text in Indian languages. The search and replace facility will certainly streamline proper use of the different words and phrases.

The exchange of E-mail and fax messages in Indian languages will enable the use of web browsers or any standard text editor to view the messages. It will help in sending Indian language messages in different formats. Apart from helping create web pages, `iLEAP’ enables to publish in Indian languages from desktop.

Labelled as the “internet ready” software by the creators, it is more user friendly than similar previous versions. It will no doubt come handy to professionals, individual users, home PC users and educational institutions.
