Akal Takht jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti faced the anger of youths here today when he came out of Singh Sabha Gurdwara after addressing a huge gathering.

They were protesting against an article in Punjabi magazine Spokesman that quoted Giani Puran Singh praising Nirankaris and Radhaswami and criticising Sikh missionaries and urging youths to stay away from them.

‘‘RSS ke agent Puran Singh ko barkhast karo, barkhast karo’’ (Puran Singh, head priest of Harmandir Sahib, is an RSS agent and should be expelled),’’ the youths shouted.

Vedanti was surrounded and asked why he failed to react to the ‘‘derogatory’’ remarks. ‘‘How come you tolerate people like Puran Singh who says he burnt gutkas (small booklets of Sikh scriptures) published by Sikh missionaries?’’ they said.

Vedanti urged the youths to ‘‘come to the Akal Takht and discuss the matter’’. Fearing trouble, bodyguards whisked Vedanti into a car.
