MUMBAI, Feb 22: A splendid knock of 83 by opener Girish Vasvani and an unbeaten half century by Pranab Chavan, helped Shardashram (English) to beat defending champions Balmohan Vidyamandir by eight wickets and enter the final of the Kellogg’s Super Cup Inter-School cricket tournament (45 overs), conducted by the Mumbai Schools Sports Association at the Bombay Gymkhana, today.

Shardashram, chasing a moderate total of 211 for a win, had early setbacks. However, the second-wicket pair of Vasvani and Chavan batted steadily to put on 164 runs in 33.3 overs and placed their side on the victory path.

Vasvani, who was looking good for a three-figure score, was out leg before to off-spinner Harshad Rawle. His knock was studded with nine fours and came off 106 balls.

After the exit of Vasvani, batsman-in-form southpaw Abhishek Nayar joined Chavan and both of them saw their side through without losing any more wickets. Chavan’s unbeaten innings of 57 had four hits to the ropes and came off 110 balls, while Nayar’s22 off 18 balls had four hits to the fence.

Earlier in the morning, Balmohan opted to bat after winning the toss and had a poor start. However, the second-wicket partnership of 131 runs helped them to reach the two-hundred mark. Opener Rohan Mayekar first, put on 49 runs with captain Nilesh Vichare before retiring hurt. Then, with Harshad Rawle he carried the total to 132. Mayekar hit four boundaries in his 105-ball innings of 57, while Rawle’s 54 was studded with seven fours off 48 balls.

Thereafter Pavankumar Bhosle scored a quickfire unbeaten 38 off 36 balls with just two fours.

Off-spinner Pranab Chavan was the most successful bowler with two for 54 in 14 overs.

The other semi-final between IES V N Sule Guruji and Springfield will be played tomorrow at the same venue.

A fine knock of 90 by Atiq Sayyed enabled Ramakant Desai XI to score 286 against Vasant Amladi XI in the Dadasaheb Rege, Manikrao Lotlikar and Baburao Parulekar Memorial cricket tournament, organised by the Dadar Parsee Zorastrian CC, today.

Merck enter final

E Merck beat Rallis by 95 runs to enter the final of the E Merck Pharmaceutical Shield cricket tournament at the Dadar Parsee Colony ground.
