CHANDIGARH, Nov 17: The second day of the youth festival saw competitions in debate, poetical symposium, painting, rangoli, cartooning, drama and histrionics at DAV College, Sector 10 today.
The topics of the debate was "In the opinion of the House- Elders have failed, let the youth take over.” A total of 8 participants took part in the debate from four colleges, one each for the motion and one against the motion. Government College-46 did not participate.
Nine participants including few blind students took part in the poetry recitation. Presiding over the morning session, Ramesh Chandra, former head of the Department of English, DAV College, enlightened the participants on the intricacies of debate and the role of imagination in poetry. The response to various art competitions organised in the morning was also good, particularly in drawing and rangoli competitions. There were only two entries for the cartoon contest. Prem Singh of Government College of Art presided over the function.
The afternoon session on drama and histrionics was disrupted due to power failure for over 5 hours but the programme continued with the help of generators. The professional skills of students as actors came to the fore in the one act plays. "Neel Panchhi”, performed by students of GGDSD college, Sector 32 was adjudged the best play, while "Dhoorat Samagam” by GC-46 won the second prize. Anjala Maharishi of Punjab University presided over the function. All the five government colleges of the City participated in the play and there were 4 participants in Histrionics. The guest items presented by students while results were being prepared were also interesting.
Kapil Kalyan of Government College, Sector 11 did a fine job of mimicking various actors including Amitabh Bachhan, Dharmendra, Raj Kumar, Shakti Kapoor and Mehr Mittal.

Folk Song: Harjit Singh (SGGS College, Sector 26); Jatinder (GGDSD College, Sector 32).

Drawing from Life: Manu Sharma (Government College, Sector 46); Gokmeijendum (DAV College, Sector 10).
Drawing from Still Life: Manoj (Government College, Sector 46); Sumit Rinwa (Government College, Sector 11).
Cartooning: Amandeep Shukla (DAV College, Sector 10); B Joshi (Government College, Sector 46).
Rangoli: Kamalpreet (Government College, Sector 46); Nishi Mathil (GGDSD College, Sector 32).
Histrionics: Kapil Kalyan (Government College, Sector 11).
Drama: GGDSD College bagged the first prize, while Government College, Sector 46 won the second prize. Among the individual prizes, Ravinder Rana of Government College, Sector 46 bagged the first prize; Robin Saxena of GGDSD College, Sector 32 won the second prize and Amit Sharma of DAV College, Sector 10 won the third prize.
