Refuting the Congress charge of the misuse of CBI by the Government, Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee today said his Government ‘‘does not interfere’’ with the CBI’s functioning.

The Congress had charged the Centre of misusing the CBI for ‘‘protecting’’ Union ministers accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case. More recently, after Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi was chargesheeted in a forgery case by the CBI, the Congress had alleged that the Centre was now misusing it for ‘‘oppressing political opponents’’ and called it an ‘‘election gimmick.’’

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, who is in the CBI net in the Taj Heritage Corridor case, had also charged the Centre for targeting a ‘‘Dalit’’ leader through the misuse of the CBI. Mayawati had also made allegations against Vajpayee’s family members.

On her allegations, he said: ‘‘I have already expressed sadness on that statement.’’ On whether Jogi should resign, Vajpayee said: ‘‘It is up to his conscience and what principles the Congress wants to establish.’’

On the achievements of the NDA Government on the completion of four years, he said: ‘‘Should I reply in four minutes?… To assess our performance is the job of the people and the media is also involved in it.’’
