The Manmohan Singh Government’s decision to scrap all the consultative committees of the Planning Commission is ‘‘an irresponsible act’’ and ‘‘a knee-jerk reaction’’, MDMK leader Vaiko said today.
Taking sides with the Left parties which had demanded the removal of foreign experts on the panels, Vaiko told mediapersons that the decision to do away with all the committees was ‘‘not good’’.
He added the Government ‘‘seems to have been angered’’ by the ‘‘fair demand’’ of the Communist parties for the removal of foreign experts as though allies had no right to make any demand.
On the Centre’s decision of repealing POTA through an ordinance, Vaiko, a POTA accused himself, said while he welcomed it in principle, it has ‘‘not personally helped me or anyone languishing in the prison’’ as the legislation had not been withdrawn with retrospective effect.
The amendments to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in place of POTA too contained ‘‘many undemocratic provisions’’, said Vaiko and insisted that the existing laws were sufficient to deal with terrorism. He denied any ‘‘uneasiness’’ in his ties with the DMK leadership and added that his party would continue in the alliance.
