Heavy spell of rains in city
The city recorded yet another strong spell of rain on Sunday afternoon. While forecasting rain in several parts of the district during the next 24 hours, the district flood control room said only two of the 12 talukas — Karjan (3 mm) and Chhotaudepur (1 mm) — had received rains in the 24 hours ending at 8 am. The water level in all the rivers, dams and reservoirs were way below their respective danger marks, it added.

DSO probe
District supply officials are probing the seizure in Godhra of PDS items allegedly siphoned off from the Kwant taluka. Official sources said more than 100 bags of rationed rice and wheat had been found in the Kalol area. Further details are awaited.

D B Trivedi and V H Dave have been elected chairman and vice-chairman, respectively, of the Indian Institute of Materials Management. N D Vyas and K P Vala have been elected secretary and treasurer respectively, while L P Patel, H M Bhatt, D R Yadav and B S Sodha have been elected as its national council members. Free service
The Shree Jalaram Hospital, located behind the Regional Transport Office in Warasia, will examine senior citizens free of cost for diseases of the eye, ear, nose, throat and heart during the current International Senior Citizens’ Year. The examinations will be conducted between 9 am and 11.30 am on working days.

GSFC honour
The Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited has won the National Safety Award-1998 from the British Safety Council. GSFC had been awarded the same for maintaining a good record, which was significantly better than the national average. It has also earned the Perfect Record Award from the National Safety Council, Chicago, an GSFC release said.

`Code violated’
Surat:
Dumas resident Congress worker Arun Patel has alleged before Surat Urban Development Authority chairman Arvind Godiwala and District Collector Sangeeta Singh that the BJP has violated the model code of conduct by placing its election symbol on the Bhimpore-Kuwada entry gate. In a letter to the Surat Urban Development Authority chairman and the district collector, Patel demanded immediate removal of the sign from the gate and action against the party for violating the code of conduct.

Cheque given
Mayor Bhikhabhai Boghra and Municipal Commissioner G P Mahapatra handed over a cheque for Rs 1,19,28,507 to Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel on behalf of the Surat Municipal Corporation during the latter’s visit to the city on Saturday.
