Former Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh today announced that a Kisan Jagran Yatra, focusing on the problems faced by the farmers, would be launched from here early next month.
“The Kisan Jagran Yatra, organised under the banner of Vikas Manch, a non-political outfit, would commence here on December 7,” Singh told reporters. “The march, which would conclude in Delhi on December 23, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former PM Chaudhary Charan Singh, would be flagged off in the presence of RLD chief Ajit Singh, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury and CPI’s Atul Arjan,” he said.
Singh, who would be traversing a major part of Uttar Pradesh during the yatra, said many other leaders of various political affiliations would join him at public meetings at different places, including Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Faizabad.
He said that people from all political parties were welcome to join the yatra at any stage “barring the BJP, whose policies have always been harmful for the country”. Singh also said farmers’ division along caste lines was responsible for their present plight.
“The farmers remain farmers for five years and during elections they suddenly become too conscious of their caste. This division dissipates the strength they can gather by uniting for a common cause.”
“We will try to awaken farmers, reeling under unfair competition with developed countries and high interest rates at home, to realise his power and influence government policy-making to his advantage.”
