After several ‘fiery’ incidents in Uttaranchal Vidhan Sabha over the last month, the state government has decided to build an ultra-modern new Vidhan Sabha and a secretariat complex in the Doon valley.
Although no formal decision has been made in this regard, it has been decided in principle to have a new building with safety and infrastructure in mind, Uttaranchal Forests and Urban Development Minister Navparbhat said. He added that a new site had not yet been chosen.
The main lobby was destroyed when a major fire erupted in the Vidhan Sabha on June 6 during the budget session. The day before that, a bench in the House gave way. After the fire, two other minor fire incidents were also reported from the complex. After the incidents, Uttaranchal Assembly Speaker Yashpal Arya ordered an inquiry into the building of the assembly hall and expressed his concern for the safety of those inside.
A house committee was later constituted to probe the fire incidents and corruption, if any, in the building of the assembly hall.
