After its defeat in the recent Assembly elections, the BJP’s Uttaranchal state unit has some more egg to wipe off its face, courtesy the disappearance of Rs 27 lakh from the party office in Dehra Dun.

The money was allegedly stolen in the party headquarters on Rajpur Road between April 30 and May 1. It was duly reported by state party chief Puran Chand Sharma, and an First Information Report (FIR) was lodged with the police.

Sharma said the money had been kept aside to buy property for the party. ‘‘The police have failed to nab the culprits,’’ he complained. The police have neither managed to nab any culprits nor have they stumbled on any leads.

After a delegation of senior BJP leaders complained to Narain Dutt Tiwari that no headway was being made in the case, the Chief Minister has ordered the police to get cracking in the case.

G.S. Martoliya, Superintendent of Police for Dehra Dun city, said some suspects have been rounded up. Police sources said the involvement of an insider, who knew of the presence of such a large amount in the office, couldn’t be ruled out. Meanwhile, the question lingers: what was Rs 27 lakh doing in the BJP’s state headquarters office in Dehra Dun?
