Giving a clean chit to Pakistan government, a top US Arms Control official praised President Pervez Musharraf today for his ‘‘correct’’ handling of a ‘‘very difficult’’ problem.
After the first day of bilateral dialogue with his Chinese counterparts, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security John Bolton said, the US did not think that the Pakistani government or top leaders were involved in the transfer of nuclear weapons designed by Khan to Libya, Iran and North Korea.
‘‘I think what it does show is that the fundamental motivation for Khan was, as the Government of Pakistan has said, financial,’’ Bolton said in response to another question.
At the same time, on the question of N Korea’s nuclear programme, Bolton noted that the other two countries that Khan supplied the nuclear technology were Muslim countries.
But in N Korea’s case it was different since there were no practising Muslims in that country, he noted. Bolton, who held wide-ranging talks with Chinese officials, confirmed that he also discussed the situation arising out of Khan’s admission. (PTI)

ISLAMABAD: Abdul Qadeer Khan has suffered a heart attack and was in a critical state, Dawn reported on Sunday. The Pakistan government, however, dismissed the report as fabricated. Khan’s doctor Shafiqur Rehman told AFP he last visited the scientist in January. ‘‘Last week I asked the authorities to allow me to check up Khan in the presence of a magistrate but my request was refused,’’ he said. |
