Lashing out at the US for prodding India to resume dialogue with Pakistan at this juncture, Defence Minister George Fernandes today said Washington ‘‘need not give us advice’’ on security issues.

‘‘The US need not give us advice. India is not dependent on the US. The US need not give us lessons in self-restraint,’’ he told mediapersons here when asked about statements from Washington calling for restraint and resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue.

He rebutted the Opposition’s charge of India being soft on the US in the wake of the war on Iraq saying New Delhi had expressed its opposition. ‘‘We have made it clear that we are against the war on Iraq….the Prime Minister voiced his Government’s opposition to war in Parliament and also at the all-party meeting,’’ he said. On the Opposition’s attack on the Government for its failure to get a resolution condemning the US-led military action in Iraq passed by Parliament, he said it could not be done as there was no consensus.
