The US said it could slap hefty import duties on paper supplies from China, India and Indonesia on charges of unfair pricing and subsidies.

The US Commerce Department said it agreed to probe complaints by the Association of American School Paper Suppliers. They are seeking a single duty of 258 per cent on China, combined duties up to 278 per cent on India and up to 178 per cent on Indonesia. The US International Trade Commission must issue a notice that the US has been materially harmed by the imports for the case to proceed. The decision is expected by October 24.
