US: India’s stand on UN reforms disappointing

Following the US statement that it was “disappointed” with India’s stance on general reforms of the United Nations, the Permanent Representative of India to the UN, Nirupam Sen, said he had “no idea” about it.

Following the US statement that it was “disappointed” with India’s stance on general reforms of the United Nations, the Permanent Representative of India to the UN, Nirupam Sen, said he had “no idea” about it. Sen said that India had been very actively and positively perusing the issue of UN reforms, which has been widely accepted and acknowledged by a large number of countries.

“The US delegation has never expressed its disappointment with us on this issue (UN reforms) so far,” Sen said. “Clearly on the revitalisation of the General Assembly, our position is different from the permanent five,” he said adding that India would continue with its endeavour for General Assembly reforms along with seeking more representative character of the UN Security Council.

Reforms of the six-decade old UN would be one of the key issues of discussion at the 61st session of the General Assembly, which started earlier this week.

Assistant Secretary of State for International Organisations, Kristin Silverberg, said:

“While we have been cooperating with India on so many issues, we are disappointed with its disagreement on various UN reforms issues.”

Silverberg is responsible for the development and implementation of the US policy in the UN, its technical and specialised agencies, and other international organisations.

One of the issues where the US has been disappointed, she said is the Mandate issue. The UN has about 9,000 mandates, instructions and programmes from the General Assembly to the Secretariat. Many of them have never been reviewed and while others have never been looked into to see if they have been effective, she observed.
