The likely release of Mohammed Azmath after a 10-month-long ordeal has brought smiles back on the faces of his wife and relatives. Azmath was originally detained by the FBI as a material witness in the investigation of the September 11 attacks.

The FBI could not find any evidence that Azmath, who hails from the city, was involved in the attacks. He has now been booked in a credit card fraud case.

Azmath pleaded guilty in the fraud case and that could result in eight to 14 months imprisonment. However, he may not have to serve any additional sentence as he has already been incarcerated for the minimum term.

‘‘He talked to me three days ago. He was sounding hopeful that he would be released soon,’’ Tasleem said.

But, the atmosphere in the house of Ayub Ali Khan, who was arrested along with Azmath, was still tense. Ayub was also charged with credit card fraud.

His family is not sure at what stage the case is. ‘‘Ayub talked to us over telephone on June 5. He asked us to write to the judge to release him soon as the charges against him could not be proved,’’ his sister Syed Fatima said.

And she was unhappy over the little cooperation the family received from the state and the Centre.
