While the HRD Ministry has been defending its move to reduce IIM fees, saying it had been recommended by the U.R. Rao committee, Rao today clarified that his report did not deal with IIMs.

IIMA Director Bakul Dholakia said the ministry had refused to share the Rao committee report with them.

‘‘We have tried to get a copy of the report. The request was made to the government about 15 days ago, but we have not yet received any response,’’ said Dholakia.

In his statement, Rao said, ‘‘The report does not deal with the seven IITs and the six IIMs, but with other 924 management institutes and over 1,200 engineering colleges.’’

Rao said, ‘‘It is a bogey that the HRD Ministry will snatch away the autonomy given to the IIMs by increasing its grants. The ministry will increase grants to compensate for the loss in fees.’’

Dholakia ruled out any legal action by the IIMs, but added: ‘‘Everything depends on the board members’’.
