It was a reservation rally with a difference. In the tribal heartland of Rajasthan, under the strong sun, hundreds gathered to ‘‘educate themselves’’ about the ‘‘reservation scam’’ and they all went back convinced that they were also entitled to that status.Organised by the Social Justice Front, today’s rally was not about one community, it was about many. Representatives of the Brahmin and Rajput communities shared centrestage as the minority 40 per cent of the ‘‘Swarna’’ class (category of people with no reservations) from the region hung on to every word of their leaders.‘‘Ordinary citizens have lost all their rights,’’ said Satyanarayan Singh of the Social Justice Front. ‘‘Thanks to the Bhuria Commission, in this entire area, an ordinary man cannot contest any elections or ever dream of becoming a sarpanch. All seats are reserved for tribals and even there, the Bhils are not getting any advantage of this reservation while the Meenas make the most of it.’’Rajput leader Manohar Singh Krishnawat added: ‘‘This is not only about the Rajputs, but about everyone. The Brahmins, Rajputs, Mahajans, Vaish and even the tribals, all have to join hands and demand forcefully.’’ The crowd muttered in agreement. ‘‘We have become second-rate citizens,’’ said an old gentleman.Ishwar Singh Chauhan was busy explaining the issue to people who didn’t get it. ‘‘It is simple,’’ he told a group of villagers. ‘‘Till a few years ago, some of our representatives became village headmen or made it to some other post. Look around you now, how many sarpanches do we have, all around there are only tribals.’’
