The UPA government’s controversial move to reserve a ‘‘certain percentage’’ of all development funds for minorities has been criticised by the BJP and the Left too has expressed concern.

Reacting to The Sunday Express report that the Government plans to earmark 18.4 per cent—the percentage of minority population in the country—of all key social sector programmes and their outlay for minorities, BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan said the UPA move was just another in a long series of “minority appeasement, ever since it took over.”

“We acknowledge the need for Muslims to get better opportunities in education and employment. But the proportionate allotment of funds will lead to fragmentation of society. We in the BJP stand for justice for all and appeasement of none,” he said.

According to Mahajan, similar moves earlier by the government had been rapped by the judiciary. ‘‘Both in the case of job reservation in Andhra Pradesh and the AMU minority status, courts have slammed the decision. This move also will face the same fate,’’ he said.

CPI secretary D Raja also opposed the move for fund allocation on the basis of population. ‘‘It is neither politically correct nor practical,’’ said Raja, adding that ‘‘such a measure will lead to complications and controversies.’’ He, however, emphasised the need for special programmes for minority welfare.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said ‘‘Many measures are being taken by the UPA government for the welfare of the backward and deprived sections of our society. However, on this particular issue, I can neither confirm nor deny. But our party believes in development with a human face.’’
