Dubbing the four years of UPA Government as an “era of golden failures,” BJP has demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram, as inflation touched a 13-year high of 11.05 per cent on Friday.

“Today’s double-digit inflation rate comes after a gap of over a decade. It was during the period of 1992-1995 that the country (last) witnessed such high levels of inflation, a level unheard of throughout the period that the NDA Government was at the helm… The UPA coalition has been scripting an epic of failures over the past four years, and it has undone the hard work put in by the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre,” said BJP president Rajnath Singh on Friday.

The UPA Government, in fact, faced a double whammy as the uncertainty over the Indo-US nuclear deal mounted on Friday, giving the BJP a perfect theme for the launch of its pre-election campaign from Palghat in Kerala.

Senior leader Venkaiah Naidu said that the UPA Government’s days were “numbered” and the countdown for its fall “had already begun”. He also predicted that there was every possibility of the Left withdrawing its support for the Government by August 15.
